Frequently Asked Questions

Once grades have been officially recorded, students are notified via their campus email account at the end of the fall and spring semesters. Students must regularly check their campus email for these critical notifications. At the end of the semester, students can also check their academic status by going to the “Student Records” tab in their campus portal account.

Yes, there are some limitations:

  1. Students who receive financial aid are strongly encouraged to speak with their Financial Aid Advisor to see how their academic standing may affect their financial aid.

  2. Students on notice must meet with their academic counselor. Students in special programs, such as EOPS, Raices, Transfer Academy, Umoja, and Transfer Achievement Program (TAP), should contact their special program for an academic counseling appointment.

If you are not part of a special program, please visit https://www.sbcc.edu/counselingcenter/ for information on the Academic Counseling Center’s same-day services that are available in person or remote. You can schedule an appointment with your academic counselor using Starfish in your Pipeline account.

  3. Students will lose priority registration after two consecutive semesters of substandard academic performance.

When a student withdraws from a class, the student’s official record will reflect a grade of “W” for that class. If the percentage of the cumulative units of “W” (and/or “I” or “No Pass”) reaches or exceeds 50% of all units attempted, the student will be placed on progress notice.

Unfortunately, the method used for determining academic status does not distinguish between academic goals. We must inform all students when they fall into a notice or required academic and/or progress pause category. If you receive a required academic and/or progress pause notification, you can explain your personal situation through the appeal process.

Students are strongly encouraged to schedule an appointment with an Academic Counselor to discuss issues interfering with academic success.  In this meeting, students can obtain referrals and/or discuss personal challenges, changes in family needs, work conflicts, course selection, educational goals, or any concerns that might hinder academic success.  Students can also visit Student Health Services for personal /mental health counseling.

A student placed on required academic and/or progress pause may submit the online petition form in compliance with administrative procedures. Required academic and/or progress pause may be postponed, and the student may be allowed to enroll next semester if the student’s appeal is approved. The link to the form (petition for reinstatement) is sent out with the required academic and/or progress pause notification via students’ campus email account at the end of the fall and spring semesters once grades have been officially recorded.  Students must regularly check their campus email accounts and submit the petition form before the deadline.
